Sporting Aims and Provision

At Mossgate we value the importance of Physical Education to develop children’s physical competence and confidence.   P.E. provides opportunities for our children to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams.
P.E. also promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles.

During their P.E. lessons, our children at Mossgate will plan, perform and evaluate their actions, ideas and performances in order to improve their quality and effectiveness.

In Reception, learning will focus on developing coordination, moving in different ways, controlling objects and negotiating space safely.

Children in Key Stage One are taught the skills to support Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics and games. Children will develop fundamental movements including travelling, sending and receiving skills.  They will also work towards performing in Dance and Gymnastics showing control and coordination over movements.  Children will also be taught attacking and defending skills and apply them to games.

Children at Key Stage Two continue with Dance, Games and Gymnastics and also undertake Athletics during the summer term. Year Five have swimming throughout the year.  KS2 children will also take part in outdoor education.  They will develop their skills in orienteering, working as a team and have opportunities for outdoor education both within school and outside school, e.g. local parks and various places in the Lake District.

All classes will undertake P.E. twice a week fulfilling, whenever possible, the recommendation of 2 hours physical activity per week.

We are keen to promote healthy competition, and we take part in lots of sporting competitions with other schools from Lancaster, Morecambe and other rural areas. Events such as interschool athletics, hockey, netball, rounders, football and gymnastics competitions are regularly attended.  We have a qualified gymnastics coach who teaches the children.

In addition to inter-school events, we also hold our own Mossgate Sports Day. All the children in the school take part in some fun and some competitive races, games and events – watch out for the parents/carers race!!

We work in partnership with Heysham High School, who have Sports College status. We often access the skills and expertise of visiting coaches and run a range of sporting after-school clubs.
