Maths

Mathematics is a tool for everyday life.  It includes numerical skills, logical reasoning, problem solving skills, and the ability to think in an abstract way.

The school follows the guidelines of the National Curriculum for Mathematics.

At Mossgate Primary School we value mathematics because it provides opportunities to:

 enrich children's experiences

 provide pupils with the skills to understand and investigate their world

 develop children's powers of logical and creative thought

 equip children with key numerical skills and knowledge

 apply calculations with speed and accuracy and to

 experience the wonder and excitement of mathematical relationships.

The Foundation Stage

Pupils in Reception follow the Foundation Stage Profile which require pupils to:

 say number names in order, recognise numerals 0-20 and order numbers up to 20

 count reliably up to 20 everyday objects and use maths to solve practical problems

 relate addition to combining two groups and subtraction to taking away and use the language of adding and subtracting up to 20

 find one more or one less than a number from 1 to 20

 talk about, recognise and recreate simple patterns, using everyday words to describe position

 use language to describe the shape and size of solids and flat shapes (circle, bigger) and to compare quantities (greater, smaller, heavier, lighter)

 to solve problems  including doubling, halving and sharing.

 to count on or back to solve a problem

Key Stage 1

During Key Stage 1 pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussion. They:

 learn to count, read, write and order numbers to 100 and beyond

 develop a range of mental calculation skills and use these confidently in different settings

 learn about shape and space through practical activity which builds on their knowledge of their immediate environment

 begin to grasp mathematical language using it to talk about and describe their work

During the Key Stage pupils will be taught knowledge, skills and understanding appropriate to their needs, through:

 practical activity, exploration and discussion

 using mathematical ideas in practical activities, then recording these using objects, pictures, diagrams, words, numbers and symbols

 using mental images of numbers and their relationships to support the development of mental calculation strategies

 estimating, drawing and measuring in a range of practical contexts including time

 drawing inferences from data in practical activities

 exploring and using a variety of resources and materials, including ICT and through

 activities that encourage them to make connections between number work and other aspects of their work in mathematics

Key Stage 2

During Key Stage 2 pupils use the number system more confidently. They will be expected to move from counting reliably to calculating fluently with all four number operations. They will be expected to tackle number problems mentally before trying other methods. Pupils will explore features of shape and space and develop their measuring skills in a range of contexts. They will be expected to discuss and present their methods and reasoning using a wide range of mathematical language, diagrams and charts.

During the key stage pupils will be taught knowledge, skills and understanding appropriate to their needs through:

 activities that extend their understanding of the number system to include integers, fractions and decimals

 approximating and estimating more systematically in their work in mathematics including being able to tell the time accurately.

 using patterns and relationships to explore simple algebraic ideas

 applying their measuring skills in a range of contexts

 drawing inferences from data in practical activities, and recognising the difference between meaningful and misleading representations of data

 exploring and using a variety of resources and materials, including ICT
